The World : Thatcher Warns Japanese

Share

British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher said she warned Japanese Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone at the weekend Bonn economic summit that Japan must act quickly to reform its trade policy, which she said can be so unfair it “sticks in my gullet.” But in a British Broadcasting Corp. radio interview, Thatcher said she fears the Japanese will not do enough to avoid retaliatory sanctions. Thatcher said she was particularly bitter over the loss of a $500-million contract with Turkey to build a second bridge over the Bosporus. Japan won the project by using its export profits to offer more special credits than the British-led consortium, she said.
