The Region : Full Power Due Today in Diablo Reactor
The first of two units of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant was on the verge of full commercial operation at last. By 2 a.m. today, the first unit at the $5.6-billion plant was expected to have achieved 100% power, said Ron Weinberg, spokesman for Pacific Gas & Electric Co., which owns the plant. At full commercial operation the unit will generate 1.1 million kilowatts of electricity, enough to serve 1.1 million Northern and Central California residents, he said.
