The quote over the headline of your front-page feature (April 29), “Longest War Clings to U.S. Conscience,” says, “All for Nothing.”

The Vietnam War was emphatically not all for nothing if we have the guts to learn what that awful experience teaches--namely that there are limits to power.

We can’t force our system on others or save them from another’s unless that’s what they want--unless it’s their first priority.

If we can just get this hard lesson through our heads, the dead shall not have died in vain.
