Irish Prime Minister Garret Fitzgerald won Canadian support for Anglo-Irish talks on the future of Northern Ireland. After a 45-minute meeting in Ottawa with Brian Mulrony, Fitzgerald said his Canadian counterpart is “very anxious to give it the maximum support.” Fitzgerald said there is a 505 chance that talks with Britain could result in a peaceful solution to the sectarian conflict in Ulster that has left more than 2,400 dead since 1969. The minority Roman Catholic population wants to end British rule in Northern Ireland.
