Rival militiamen traded rocket, mortar and tank fire along the Green Line that divides the Muslim and Christian sectors of Beirut, leaving nine people dead and 48 wounded. The 12 hours of shelling is believed to be the heaviest since last Tuesday’s cease-fire halted similar combat that killed 28 people. Meanwhile, in southern Lebanon, Druze militiamen razed the abandoned Christian village of Alman, near Sidon, and ransacked the St. Sauveur Monastery, the mother house of the small Basilian Order of St. Sauveur.
