The Conservative Rabbinical Assembly has barred 51 members of Israel’s Knesset (Parliament) from speaking or accepting awards at its 850 U.S. congregations because of their support for stricter interpretations of Israel’s “Law of Return.” The amendment, which lost on a 62-51 vote, would have changed the definition of a Jew by recognizing as legitimate converts only those whose conversion was according to Jewish law, as defined by Israel’s Orthodox Establishment. Among those affected by the announcement are Israeli Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir and Moshe Arens, the ambassador to the United States.
