Two California builders--A. G. Spanos Construction Inc., Stockton, and American Diversified, Costa Mesa--made the top 10 of Builder magazine’s Builder 100 list of the biggest home builders in the nation.
Leading the list is the Lincoln Property Co., Dallas, with 14,000 total units started in 1984, for gross revenues of $1.3 billion. The firm builds apartments in the South and West and ranked second on the 1984 list, according to Frank Anton, the magazine’s editor. The list is in the magazine’s May issue. To be on the list, a builder had to have a minimum of 1,000 starts last year.
The Spanos firm started 13,340 units last year, while American Diversified started 8,079 units. Pulte Home Corp., West Bloomfield, Mich., was third with 11,008 units, followed by U. S. Home Corp., Houston, 10,081; Oxford Development Corp., Bethesda, Md., 8,706; Cardinal Industries Inc., Columbus, Ohio, 8,167. Jim Walter Homes Inc., Tampa, was eighth with 7,809; Ryan Homes Inc., Pittsburgh, was ninth with 7,565, and Centex Corp., Dallas, was 10th with 6,500 units.
Kaufman & Broad, West Los Angeles, was 30th on the list with 2,600 units--all for-sale housing, according to a spokeswoman. The firm claims it is the largest home builder in California--based on the number of for-sale units--with revenues exceeding $600 million in 1984.
