Trade Embargo on Nicaragua
I have felt that Reagan’s decision to visit Bitburg was a national and international political blunder that could not be topped. I suggest, however, that Reagan has now topped that blunder by announcing immediately upon his arrival in Germany that he has unilaterally (without consultation with Congress or our European allies) imposed a complete economic embargo against tiny Nicaragua.
Since Reagan places so much importance on symbolism and “sending messages,” it seems to me that his timing of such an announcement (while has was on German soil with plans to honor Nazi war dead) was an even greater political blunder because the ominous symbolism will not be lost on the people of Central America, Mexico and other Third World countries.
