TRENTON, N.J. —
Water rationing went into effect today in 93 municipalities in northeastern New Jersey with the state facing its worst drought in half a century.
Gov. Thomas H. Kean expanded a state of emergency, originally declared April 17, when he ordered the 93 towns and townships to eliminate such practices as washing cars and watering lawns. The affected households are now limited to 50 gallons of water daily for each person.
