The number of cholera cases reported worldwide dropped by more than half last year--from 64,061 in 1983, the World Health Organization said Friday.

In its Weekly Epidemiological Record, the U.N. specialized agency described the decrease as still significant, cautioning that data for some countries is incomplete.

A number of African countries that had big cholera outbreaks in 1983--notably Ghana, Malawi, Mozambique, Zaire and South Africa--reported fewer cases last year.
