The Nation : Bombings Up, Deaths Off

The number of bombings in the nation jumped 17% last year, but deaths from such incidents fell 50% and fewer attacks were traced to terrorists, the FBI said. The number of bombings attributed to terrorists fell from 22 in 1983 to 13 last year, and the number of deaths attributed to bombings fell from 12 in 1983 to six last year. There were 803 bombing incidents in 1984, 687 in 1983, the latter a 14% decline from 795 in 1982. Residential property was the most frequent bombing target, accounting for 226 attacks. The FBI said 136 were directed at commercial operations or office buildings and 129 at vehicles.
