Fighting between Shia Muslim Amal militiamen and Syrian-backed Palestinians engulfed three refugee camps today, leaving at least 30 people killed, including 16 refugees, and more than 130 wounded, Lebanese army and militia sources said.

The fighting around Beirut’s Palestinian refugee camps of Sabra, Chatilla and Borj el Brajne was the worst since September, 1982, when Palestinians battled Israeli and Christian forces. It was the bloodiest confrontation ever between the powerful Amal militia and Palestinians.
