San Diego Roundup : World Champion Louganis to Dive in San Diego Exhibition

Three-time world champion diver Greg Louganis, who won two Gold Medals at the 1984 Olympics, will participate in an exhibition and a fund-raiser in San Diego Saturday.

Louganis, who grew up locally, will join other members of the U.S. National Diving Team at the San Diego Diving Spectacular, which will take place at noon and 4 p.m. at UC San Diego's Canyonview Pool. Both shows will concentrate on elements of competitive diving, training and diving safety.

Saturday night from 7-10, Louganis will be present at a program in the Balboa Park-based San Diego Hall of Champions. National Diving Team Coach Ron O'Brien and 1984 Silver Medalist Michelle Mitchelle, will also be on hand. Louganis was the Hall of Champions' 1984 Amateur Star of the Year.

The Western Region Slo-Pitch Softball Championships, a benefit for the March of Dimes National Telethon, will be Sunday and Monday at the Rancho Bernardo Community Park and June 1 and 2 at the San Ysidro Sports Park. Men's teams, in Division C and under, are eligible for the event.

The top finishers from the tournament will be eligible for the finals, to be held in Las Vegas, and also will receive prizes.

Young soccer players can sign up for the American Youth Soccer Organization at two locations Saturday. Registrations will be taken from 8 a.m. to noon at Serra High School and the Kearny Mesa Recreation Center. Youngsters between ages 5-18 are eligible.
