Berlin Escape Thwarted

WEST BERLIN —
East German border guards hustled off a man with his arms raised soon after shots were fired Saturday to prevent an attempted escape over the Berlin Wall, West Berlin police said.
The state-run East German news agency, which rarely reports on such events, acknowledged that guards had stopped an attempted escape and said the man was a criminal.
