A family’s widely broadcast offer of a dying baby’s liver to a needy recipient had to be scrapped when doctors determined the organ could not be transplanted. The unusual search--organs are generally so desperately needed that no media broadcast is necessary--ended when doctors at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center declared the 8-month-old comatose infant’s liver was useless for transplant. The child has been in a coma since doctors operated on him last week for a blood clot near the brain, sustained during a fall. Doctors declined to identify the family or the child.
