Tustin Marine Corps Air Station Will Get New Commander

Col. David L. McEvoy will assume command of the Tustin Marine Corps Air Station from Col. Robert G. Mitchell during a change of command ceremony to be held there Thursday. Mitchell will now become the special projects officer at El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. McEvoy most recently served as community planning and liaison officer at El Toro.

Lt. Col. Samuel J. Ware recently assumed command of the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron-465, Marine Aircraft Group-16, at Tustin Marine Corps Air Station. He assumed command from Lt. Col. James M. O’Brien, who will report for duty with the 3d Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan.

Golden West College will honor two women at its commencement ceremony tonight in Huntington Beach. Neena R. Krieger of Huntington Beach will be named outstanding student of the year and Lorraine Faber, also of Huntington Beach, will be presented the outstanding citizen award. Krieger, 29, a psychology major, was selected from 12 candidates by a committee of faculty, students and staff for her leadership qualities and service to the college and community. The award carries with it a $1,000 scholarship. Faber will be honored for her “resourceful and dedicated activism” in the service of Amigos de Bolsa Chica, the West Orange County wetlands support organization.

James Roosevelt, former congressman who is an author, businessman and eldest son of the late President Franklin Roosevelt, will receive the national Americanism Award from the Anti-Defamation League Thursday at the Westin South Coast Plaza hotel. Roosevelt is being honored for his past work around the nation and in Orange County. Co-chairmen of the dinner-dance event are Walter Gerken, chief executive officer of Pacific Mutual Insurance, and last year’s winner, Tom Nielsen, president of the Irvine Co.

Maria C. Linder, professor of chemistry at Cal State Fullerton, will be presented the university’s highest faculty honor--its Outstanding Professor Award--on Friday, before the college’s commencement ceremonies. Linder’s students and colleagues (from the university and across the country) cited her teaching ability, devotion to students and “trail-blazing” research in their call for her to be singled out for recognition. Linder holds a doctorate in biochemistry from Harvard University and completed postdoctoral training under fellowships from the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute.

Alta Yetter and Anthony Aguilar have been awarded the 1985 Dr. Robert B. Moore Award by the Orange County Industry Education Council for their contributions to Orange County education. Yetter works for the state Employment Development Department. Aguilar is a school representative for the Southern California Edison Co. The council was formed in 1957 by Orange County business, industry and education leaders to improve the quality of mathematics and science instruction in county schools.
