A picnic and rally in support of rent control will be sponsored by the Oakhills Tenants Assn. on Sunday in the wake of two rental hikes in the last eight months at the Oakhills Apartments complex on the north side of the city.

The potluck picnic and rally will take place from noon to 3 p.m. at Potrero Heights Park, 8051 Arroyo Drive.

Although the city has a housing mediation board to help settle landlord-tenant disputes, members of the association formed this month feel that passage of a rent control ordinance is the best answer, said Julian Chasin, co-chairman of the organization.

“The Making of Snow White,” a film about how Fremont Elementary School students produced a play based on the fairy tale, has been nominated for a Los Angeles Emmy Award by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The film, produced by teacher Pete Villescas, was one of 20 competing and one of three nominated in the public access category, which recognizes locally produced programs broadcast on local cable television channels, said Carolyn Oberman, awards administrator for the Los Angeles Emmy Awards. The other two nominees are “Valley Magazine” and “L.A. Arts,” both produced by San Fernando Valley Cable. “Snow White” aired on Falcon Cable TV.

In the public access category, Oberman said, it is possible for all three to receive an award. The awards will be announced Saturday.
