MANAGUA, Nicaragua —
Government troops killed 375 anti-Sandinista rebels in fighting across the country during the last two weeks, the Defense Ministry reported.
In a separate report Saturday, ministry spokesmen said the contras attacked a barge on the Caribbean coast, destroying nine vehicles, including four large work trucks. There was no report of casualties in the action, which took place at Bluefields, 165 miles east of Managua.
Independent observers said the government’s report of 375 contra deaths seemed high.
