A gang of burglars, apparently frustrated by their inability to climb through windows protected by iron bars, shot through the glass and killed a British architect and his wife, police and residents said Sunday.

A private security guard on patrol was also shot to death by the burglars Saturday night in the Nairobi suburb of Karen.

Police said that Kevin Craig McFeeley, 60, and his wife, Cora, were shot several times by the robbers. Nothing was stolen from the house and the robbers fled into the nearby bush.

The plush suburb of Karen, named after Dutch author and pioneer farmer Karen Blixen, who wrote under the name Isak Dinesen, is one of the worst crime areas of Nairobi and has been the scene of repeated violent attacks on private homes in recent weeks.
