Electronic Data Systems and the University of Michigan formed the research center to study industrial applications of artificial intelligence. EDS and university officials said they want the new Center for Machine Intelligence, to be located in Ann Arbor, to provide the kind of focus for research in artificial intelligence that the Microelectronics & Computer Technology Corp. in Austin, Tex., has given to the development of a so-called fifth-generation computer.
