E. G. Cunningham has been named president and chief executive of Great American Bancorp, Century City, and its subsidiary, Great American Bank.

Cunningham resigned last month as chairman, president and a director of First National Corp., parent of San Diego-based First National Bank, which he founded.

At Great American, he succeeds Jack A. Sweeney as chief executive of the holding company and president and chief executive of the bank, which has assets of $115 million.

Mark A. Rubin, holding company president and, with Sweeney, a co-founder of the bank, continues as vice chairman of Great American.

First National Bank was the primary banker for J. David & Co., a La Jolla investment firm that collapsed in February, 1984. The San Diego bank has assets of $119 million.

Unocal Corp., Los Angeles, promoted Sam A. Snyder to vice president and general counsel. He succeeds George C. Bond, who is retiring after 30 years with the company--12 as vice president and general counsel. Snyder, who joined Unocal in 1955, was named assistant general counsel in 1973.

Stanley H. Kubrin has been named senior vice president and chief financial officer at AMI Diagnostic Services, a subsidiary of American Medical International, Culver City.

Durham Cos., El Monte, named John R. Edney president and chief operating officer of its largest subsidiary, Russell Transportation. CALIFORNIA

Pacific Scientific Co., Anaheim, named Edgar S. Brower, a former Allied Corp. executive, as its new president and chief operating officer. He succeeds Harry R. Goff, who continues as chairman and chief executive. Brower had been president of Allied Electronics Components Co. and a corporate vice president of Morristown, N.J.-based Allied.

Mountain View-based Scientific Micro Systems named Charles Mathews president and chief executive, succeeding Hugh Kern, who is retiring. Mathews had been president and chief operating officer of Cipher Data Products, San Diego.

First Commercial Bancorp, Sacramento, said that President and Chief Executive Frank E. Bristow resigned and will pursue “a number of options.” Chairman Manuel Perry Jr. will assume the job of chief executive, while Executive Vice President Ray L. Weimer will become chief administrative officer of the holding company and of First Commercial Bank.

Johan F. Blokker has been named president and chief executive of Adac Laboratories, San Jose. He replaces co-founder Charles Cantoni, who is leaving to pursue other interests, Adac said. NATION

Paul C. Sheeline, chairman and chief executive of Intercontinental Hotels Corp., New York, will retire as chief executive at the end of September while continuing as chairman. The company, which has 97 hotels in 46 countries, said Sheeline, 63, will be succeeded as chief executive by Hans G. Sternik, who is currently president and chief operating officer.
