A unanimous City Council on Monday appropriated $287,000 to buy land for a new fire station to be built before the end of the year near Warner and Grand avenues in southeastern Santa Ana.

The 265- by 100-foot site for Fire Station No. 9 will be purchased from Southern California Edison Co., Chief William Reimer said, with construction scheduled to begin in July.

Old Station 9, which housed engine and truck companies and training facilities, was closed in May, 1984. The truck company was transferred to Station No. 6 on MacArthur Boulevard, and the engine company moved to Station No. 4 at Broadway and Edinger Avenue.

The engine company definitely will be housed in the new station, and the ladder truck at the MacArthur Boulevard station may move in as well, Reimer said. Altogether, between 18 and 25 firefighters will work out of the new station.

Firefighting training operations will probably be resumed in combination with police and communications training, Reimer said. Plans have not yet been formulated, he said.
