A public hearing on a plan by an affiliate of the Church of Scientology to buy the former La Vina Hospital has been scheduled by the Town Council at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Altadena Senior Citizens Center, 560 E. Mariposa Ave. The Church of Religious Technology, whose principal mission is the preservation of Scientology materials, has entered escrow to buy the property from Huntington Memorial Hospital of Pasadena. Completion of the sale depends on the church’s ability to obtain a conditional use permit from the Los Angeles Regional Planning Commission. The commission staff is reviewing the permit request and will schedule a hearing on the matter. The Altadena Town Council is an advisory group and not a municipal government. Based on testimony from local residents, the council will make a recommendation to the Planning Commission on the church’s bid to purchase the hospital, Council Chairman Frank Bridal said.
