The 27-year-old aircraft carrier Ranger is scheduled to return to San Diego Saturday after completing a $240-million, 13-month overhaul at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. Nearly 6 1/2 million man hours were spent working on the ship.

During the overhaul, three Vulcan missile systems were installed, new radars were added and communications equipment was improved. Boilers were repaired, an evaporator capable of producing 100,000 gallons of fresh water daily was installed and all four aircraft catapults were overhauled, according to the Navy.

In addition, the ship’s air conditioning units were replaced with two new 363-ton units, while all asbestos insulation throughout the Ranger was removed and replaced. The Ranger’s hull also was coated with a new, special paint designed to reduce friction. The ship is commanded by Capt. Arthur Frederickson.
