Wary of rusty operators and untested equipment, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission began round-the-clock monitoring of the restart of the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, near Harrisburg, Pa. The plant’s operator announced that it will begin an atomic chain reaction at Unit 1 on Tuesday, more than six years since it was last operated. The facility was shut down when the adjacent Unit 2 was crippled in the worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear history on March 28, 1979.
