Local office building janitors, who are the highest paid in the nation, have approved a new contract that includes a wage freeze during the first year.

The janitors ratified a new contract this week by more than 83%, said Richard Leung, business representative for Service Employees Union Local 87.

The pact includes a pay freeze at $10.55 an hour for the first year with raises of 35 cents an hour in each of the two remaining years of the contract, Leung said.

The contract with the Building Owners and Managers Assn. guarantees against layoffs and against a two-tier wage scale, which is the practice of paying new workers less than those already employed.
