30 Reported Dead in Sri Lanka Violence
Thirty Sinhalese and Tamil civilians have been killed in violence in Sri Lanka’s northeastern Trincomalee district in the past 11 days, the government said Friday.
The National Security Ministry said in a statement that the incidents followed “provocative acts carried out by terrorists whose main objective is to destabilize Trincomalee district.” It denied local and foreign press reports that security forces had killed 80 people in the district.
Guerrillas are fighting to set up a separate state for the island’s minority Tamils.
