LOS ANGELES COUNTY’S CROWDED JAILS
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, last weekend’s disturbance came on the day on which it recorded the year’s highest number of inmates. The Sheriff’s Department says that the number of inmates has long exceeded the designed capacity of 5,136. The capacity of the countywide system is 11,260. Here are figures for the same day in preceding years:
