Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash won a decisive victory in the first presidential elections in the breakaway “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” which he proclaimed in 1983 and which is recognized only by Turkey. With the ballot count completed, Denktash, 62, had 70% of the votes, with the rest divided among five others. The island has been split since Turkey occupied the northern third after an abortive coup in 1974. Denktash said he would be willing to form a federation with Greek Cypriots on the divided island.
