Japanese director Shinji Sohmei won the top prize for young film directors at the first Tokyo International Film Festival.

An international jury of seven film directors and producers announced that Sohmei, 37, won $750,000 in “Young Cinema ‘85,” the only competition category in the 10-day festival, for his 1984 film “Typhoon Club.”
