The City Council has granted final approval to the plan for Westpark, paving the way for construction of the 832-acre residential and commercial development.
In a 3-2 vote Tuesday, the council approved zoning and density requirements for the project to be built on land north of the San Diego Freeway and west of Culver Drive. It will include residential neighborhoods, commercial developments and a civic center.
Paul Ireland, city planning manager, said plans call for 5,200 residential units, including single-family homes, apartments and condominiums. In addition, he said, between 15% and 25% of the housing will be set aside for low- and moderate-income residents.
Developers are submitting plans for individual tracts within the development, and construction will begin this fall, Ireland said. “You’ll see some units going up by October,” he said.
