Two men who San Diego police say fired a handgun repeatedly into a wall while attempting to rob a La Jolla jewelry store Wednesday morning may also be responsible for at least eight other armed robberies.

Bill Robinson, a Police Department spokesman, said two men entered the Winchell Jewelry Store at 1123 Wall St. about 10:43 a.m. and demanded jewelry. When the proprietor refused, one of the men fired three bullets into the wall using a semi-automatic handgun. The men then escaped in a car stolen Tuesday from Tierrasanta. No one was injured in the incident, Robinson said.

The pair is believed responsible for at least eight robberies since October. In all but one of the robberies, shots were fired, Robinson said.
