Center Seeks Status Change

The Malibu Community Center is collecting signatures to change its status from private, non-profit corporation to community services district, which would be part of the state government. If the center can get 80% of the registered voters in the Point Dume area to sign a petition of support, the county must allow formation of the Point Dume Community Services District.

The district would not levy taxes, but would have access to surplus public property, would have an advantage over private groups in applying for government grants and might have its property taxes reduced or eliminated, said center director Kristin Reynolds.

Reynolds said she hopes the center would then be able to expand its recreational programs and establish more services for youth and senior citizens. The center needs another 140 signatures--for a total of 1,293--by July 2 to form the district, Reynolds said.

The district’s board of directors would be appointed by County Supervisor Deane Dana, whose Fourth District includes Malibu.
