Tanks rumbled across the California desert as soldiers baked in 100-degree heat. The exercise by the Nevada National Guard at Ft. Irwin is believed to be the largest such exercise since Army Desert Strike II operations at the California base 35 years ago. The 420 Nevada guardsmen who made the desert crossing from Las Vegas in tanks, armored personnel carriers, Jeeps and other vehicles, joined 2,500 California guardsmen for two weeks of mock desert battles at Ft. Irwin.
