Walesa Defies Court, Won’t Talk

Solidarity founder Lech Walesa, defying threats of criminal prosecution, today refused to answer questions from a state prosecutor investigating the activities of the underground union movement.

Police surrounded the entrance of a Gdansk court when Walesa drove up in his blue Volkswagen to answer a summons accusing him of disturbing the peace and leading an illegal organization. Walesa received a warning that he risks imprisonment unless he stops his illegal activities and then returned to his shipyard job, an aide said.
