The Nation : Soviet Bid to Recruit Spies

The number of instances in which American soldiers have been approached by suspected Soviet or Eastern Europe intelligence operatives and invited to act as spies has risen dramatically in recent years, the Army said. The Army Intelligence and Security Command recorded 481 incidents during fiscal year 1984, which ended Sept. 30, in which soldiers reported having been contacted by suspected agents--a 400% increase since fiscal 1978, the Army said. Of the total, 94 instances were considered to be “significant enough” to have been referred to other “appropriate agencies” for further investigation, the Army said.
