Orange Mayor Jim Beam was honored as the outstanding public official in 1984 by the county chapter of the American Society for Public Administration during an awards ceremony in Santa Ana Thursday.

“Mayor Beam won because of his extensive involvement and commitment to governmental and private organizations throughout the county,” said Roger Kemp, chapter president and Placentia city administrator. That involvement includes service on the county Transportation Commission, the League of California Cities and the board of the Southern California Air Quality Management District.

Other awards presented went to retired county chief executive officer Robert Thomas as outstanding public administrator, Cal State Fullerton professor Alan Saltzstein for distinguished public service, UC Irvine professor Kenneth Kramer for academic excellence and the Irvine Child Care Project for public-private sector cooperation.
