The army commander for Uganda’s western region, Lt. Col. Cirinoben Oboti, was killed in an ambush by rebels west of Kampala on Thursday, Vice President Paulo Muwango said Saturday. Five soldiers were reported slain in the clash.

Parts of northern Uganda have been racked by sporadic violence since the 1980 elections that brought President Milton Obote to power. Guerrillas led by former Defense Minister Yoweri Museveni say the elections were rigged.
