Christian Democrat Francesco Cossiga, a two-time former premier and current president of the Senate, was elected as Italy’s new president today.

Cossiga will succeed 88-year-old Sandro Pertini, a Socialist, for a seven-year term as the eighth president of the republic. At 56, he is the youngest president ever elected to the largely ceremonial office.
