The district attorney’s office abandoned its theory Tuesday that a Grossmont College business professor was “executed” by her former boyfriend and allowed him to plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

San Diego Municipal Judge H. Ronald Domnitz dismissed a murder charge against David McKay, 50, of Chula Vista, after McKay pleaded guilty to the lesser charge. McKay told the judge he shot Janette Reints, 49, on May 21 in his apartment, but he insisted the shooting was accidental.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 8 and Domnitz told McKay he could receive six years in state prison. The judge reduced bail from $100,000 to $40,000 because it was no longer a murder case.
