The Region : Guidelines for Olympic Surplus Issued

Share

Trustees of the $100-million fund that represents Southern California’s share of the $222.7-million Olympic surplus were presented with proposed guidelines for distributing the money in the form of grants. Dr. Stanton Wheeler, president of the Los Angeles Amateur Athletic Foundation, declined to detail the guidelines, other than to say they pertained only to sports primarily, but not exclusively to youth sports. Before the 1984 Games, Olympic organizers promised that all of the region’s share of the surplus would be spent on youth sports. The board is scheduled to consider the proposed guidelines on Sept. 4, after which grant applications will be reviewed and the spending could begin. Wheeler said he expected to initiate programs in addition to providing grants as a way to distribute the surplus.
