Charles Ng, a suspected accomplice in kidnapings and mass murders at a remote Calaveras County mountain hideaway, fled to Canada with a friend in early June and likely is still in that country trying to make his way to the Orient, authorities said. Police forces across Canada were seeking Ng, wanted on a federal warrant in the United States. Toronto police Sgt. Harry Cole said Ng was driven from Chicago to Detroit and across the border into the Canadian province of Ontario by David Diaz, a former cell mate at Leavenworth, Kan., where Ng served time for weapons theft. Diaz drove Ng to Chatham, about 250 miles west of Toronto, where the pair split up and Diaz returned to the United States, Cole added. He could not confirm reports that Diaz was helping the FBI in the search for the alleged accomplice of suspected mass killer Leonard Lake, who committed suicide after his arrest in San Francisco.
