No Use for These Spelling Bees

Spelling bees (“Readiness Was Not All in National Spelling Bee,” by Betty Cuniberti, June 12) to me spell STUPID. Why encourage senseless competition and the waste of countless valuable hours spent in memorizing words no one uses?
