Rebel Archbishop Marcel Lefevbre has accused Pope John Paul II of persecuting traditional Roman Catholics and recognizing a religion “invented by Satan.”

“We are persecuted and chased from Catholic churches which open their doors to Protestants, Muslims and even Freemasons,” the 80-year-old French prelate said while ordaining 11 new priests at his seminary on Saturday.

Renewing his attacks on Vatican reforms, Lefevbre rejected acceptance by Rome of equality of religions.

“The Pope himself went to pray in the Lutheran temple in Rome, thus recognizing a false religion invented by Satan,” he said.

“Luther is the most abominable heretic the world has ever known,” Lefevbre said in his sermon. “He destroyed Christianity.”
