The British Virgin Islands had been hoping for an exception, but royal tradition prevailed. Queen Elizabeth II won’t share double billing with Michael Jackson on a set of islands postage stamps, their designer said today.

Protocol forbids the monarch’s head appearing on any postage stamp portraying another living person, thus ruling out her crowned silhouette on a set of stamps depicting the rock star in his familiar red and navy “crown prince” uniform, complete with gold braiding and epaulets.

Ronald Grover, whose company designed the stamp, said it will be the first time the queen’s image has been absent from a Virgin Islands stamp. “We are disappointed that the queen is sticking to the rules,” he said.
