Toyota Motor Co. may be preparing to assemble 50,000 cars a year in the United States as early as this fall for sale in the U.S. market along with its imported models, the trade paper Automotive News reported. It said Toyota is studying the use of a plant in Fremont, Calif., where it is a partner with General Motors in building small cars sold through GM’s Chevrolet division. Toyota officials refused to confirm or deny the report.
