Agreement has been reached on 22 work-safety demands at the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports. Poor working conditions allegedly contributed to five deaths in the past year, union officials said. About 4,000 longshoremen walked off their jobs for one day last week to press their demands. David Arian, president of the International Longshoremen’s and Warehousemen’s Union Local 13, said the agreement was worked out with the Pacific Maritime Assn. over the weekend and no further work stoppages are planned.
