Charles G. Mayo, Ex-USC Graduate School Dean, Dies

Charles G. Mayo, dean of USC’s Graduate School from 1968 to 1974, has died of complications after a kidney transplant, it was learned this week.

The university reported that Mayo, at 36 the youngest person ever to head the school, died in George Washington Hospital in Washington on June 22. He was 53 and retired in 1982 as president of West Chester State College in Pennsylvania.

Mayo, who joined the political science faculty at USC in 1966, had been an assistant professor at San Francisco State College before moving to Los Angeles. He was co-author and co-editor of two books on politics and author of several papers in that field.

He is survived by his wife, Iris, and a daughter, of Alexandria, Va., Mayo’s residence since his retirement.
