Paroled Felon Held in Prison Official’s Death

CHICAGO —
An ex-convict on parole was charged Saturday with murdering a prison official outside a tavern, police said.
Steven Smith, 37, of Chicago, was ordered held on $100,000 bond in the shooting death of Virdeen Willis Jr., an assistant warden of the Pontiac Correctional Center, authorities said. Smith served time at Stateville Correctional Center on a murder conviction while Willis worked there.
