Heart Patient Schroeder Sees His Home State
Artificial heart recipient William J. Schroeder, whose mobility and speech are improving, took another van ride into his home state during the weekend, a spokeswoman said Monday.
“Mr. Schroeder went for a 50-mile drive in Indiana,” said Donna Hazle of Humana Hospital Audubon. “No date has been set for his release from the hospital, but the discussions are continuing.”
The 53-year-old retiree from Jasper was discharged on April 6 and moved into an apartment across the street. He was readmitted to the hospital after suffering a stroke on May 6 that left him partly paralyzed and unable to speak.
Implant surgeon William C. DeVries said that Schroeder’s speech “is better than it was prior to his moving to the apartment,” Hazle said.
Meanwhile, artificial heart patient Murray P. Haydon, 59, continues to recover from surgery and post-operative complications, Hazle said.
